What is Hip Pain?
Hip pain refers to discomfort or soreness in the hip joint, which is where the thigh bone (femur) meets the pelvis. It can occur on the inside or outside of the hip, in the groin area, or even radiate down the thigh or buttock.

We see a lot of people with hip pain at The LBPC and according to research, approximately 15% of adults aged 65 and older report experiencing hip pain frequently. Younger people may also experience hip pain but the causes tend to be different and are often due to trauma, overuse, or an underlying medical condition.

Common Symptoms of Hip Pain
Pain: Dull, aching, or sharp pain in the hip joint or surrounding areas.
Discomfort: Persistent discomfort in the hip, especially during activities like walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.
Stiffness: Reduced range of motion in the hip joint, making it difficult to move the leg or perform certain movements.
Swelling: Visible swelling or inflammation around the hip joint, which may be accompanied by warmth or tenderness to touch.
Limping: Alteration in gait or walking pattern due to pain or discomfort in the hip.
Groin Pain: Pain that radiates into the groin area or buttocks, especially with certain movements.

Pain at Rest: Discomfort that persists even when not putting weight on the hip, affecting sleep or rest.
Clicking or Catching Sensation: Sensation of clicking, popping, or catching within the hip joint during movement.
Weakness: Decreased strength in the hip and leg muscles, affecting activities like climbing stairs or getting up from a seated position.
Limited Activities: Difficulty with activities of daily living, such as bending over, tying shoes, or getting into and out of a car.
These are some of the common symptoms associated with hip pain, but it's important to note that experiences vary from person to person, and additional symptoms may be present depending on the underlying cause of the pain.

Why does your Hip Hurt?
Hip pain can arise from several factors that affect the complex hip joint and surrounding structures. Common causes include injuries such as strains or fractures from accidents or overuse, which can lead to inflammation and discomfort.
Conditions like arthritis, whether it's osteoarthritis from wear and tear or rheumatoid arthritis from autoimmune factors, can contribute to pain and stiffness in the hip. Bursitis, involving inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the hip joint, and tendonitis from repetitive movements can also cause significant discomfort. In some cases, hip pain may be referred from issues in the spine or pelvis.
Our approach involves a comprehensive assessment to pinpoint the exact cause of your hip pain, allowing us to develop a personalised treatment plan aimed at reducing pain, improving mobility, and restoring your quality of life.
