What is Neck Pain?

Approximately 70% of all people will experience neck pain, and up to one-third of the population have experienced neck pain at some point during the last year. Often the key to relieving neck pain is seeking help sooner than later!

Research has shown that receiving physiotherapy early on can help alleviate the current situation and minimise the risk of a future problem.

The most common symptom in the early stages of neck pain is a pain in one side of the neck with associated loss of motion when turning in one direction. Often people will also experience tension (tightness) in the upper back muscles that is worse at the end of the day or after a long day looking at the computer screen.

Some people may notice pain when they wake up that seems to have started for no apparent reason. The discomfort might be mild or severe, ranging from dull aching to acute, stabbing aches.

Additionally, neck pain can sometimes include these symptoms:

  • Difficulty sleeping due to pain and discomfort

  • Weakness in the arms, hands, or fingers. This weakness may affect grip strength or fine motor skills.

  • Headaches that include neck pain and radiating pain from the base of the skull or behind one eye

  • Numbness or tingling in the upper extremities

  • Difficulty with posture Neck pain can lead to changes in the alignment of the head, neck, and shoulders. Some people may develop forward head posture or rounded shoulders as a result of chronic neck pain

  • Radiating pain neck pain may radiate from the neck into the arms, shoulders, or upper back

These are some of the common symptoms associated with neck pain, but it's essential to note that experiences vary, and additional symptoms may be present depending on the underlying cause of the neck pain. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms you can contact us here at the LBPC.

Why does your Neck Hurt?

Understanding the common causes of neck pain is the first step toward finding relief and reclaiming your mobility. Neck pain can stem from various factors, including muscle strain due to poor posture or overuse, degenerative changes in the cervical spine, such as osteoarthritis or disc degeneration, injury from accidents or trauma, such as whiplash, and nerve-related conditions like cervical radiculopathy.

By identifying the underlying cause of your neck pain, our team at the LBPC can develop personalised treatment plans to address your symptoms and get you back to a pain free life.
