The Basset Family: Pillars of Cornwall

The Basset family of Tehidy was one of the most influential and affluent families in Cornwall during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their wealth stemmed from extensive landholdings and substantial investments in Cornwall’s thriving tin and copper mining industries. The family's estates, including the grand Tehidy House, symbolised their prominence and success.

Beyond their economic achievements, the Bassets were committed patrons of the local community. They utilised their resources to support a range of social and educational initiatives, leaving a lasting impact on the region.

Lady Frances Basset: A Beacon of Philanthropy

Frances Basset became the 2nd Baroness Basset upon the death of her father, Francis Basset, 1st Baron de Dunstanville and Basset, in 1835. The special remainder clause in the creation of the barony allowed the title to pass through the female line, a notable deviation from the traditional inheritance laws governing British peerages. This kind of provision was somewhat uncommon, and Frances Basset’s ascension to the title through this unique legal mechanism not only reflected the forward-thinking nature of the barony’s creation but also highlighted her prominent role within the Basset family and her significant contribution to its legacy.

As Baroness Basset, Frances Basset was a trailblazer in philanthropy. In 1840, she established a school for boys in a building originally constructed as stables and a vestry for Trevenson Church in 1809. Her vision transformed this building into a centre of learning, underscoring her dedication to enhancing educational opportunities for local children. Lady Basset’s support extended to at least 12 schools in the region, demonstrating her deep commitment to improving access to education.
