What will happen at your appointment?

You might be familiar with general physiotherapy, but Women's and Pelvic Health Physiotherapy could be new to you. This specialised field focuses on assessing and treating conditions related to your pelvis and pelvic floor muscles.

Life events like childbirth and menopause bring about significant changes in your body, particularly in the pelvic area. 86% of women will have a baby at some point in their lives, and nearly all women will experience menopause symptoms. These changes can lead to symptoms such as incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic pain, prolapse, and painful sex.

While these symptoms are common during and after these life stages, they can also arise at any stage of your life due to various other factors.

These symptoms can greatly affect your quality of life, confidence, and overall well-being. Pelvic health physiotherapy aims to help you manage and overcome these challenges, improving your overall health and allowing you to live more comfortably and confidently.

Physiotherapy

How Can We Help?

At the LBPC our specialist physiotherapists have a strong musculoskeletal background in addition to our pelvic health training. This means we bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to your care, allowing us to look at the bigger picture rather than focusing solely on the pelvis or pelvic floor in isolation. By taking a holistic approach, we can consider how various factors like posture, movement patterns, muscle strength, and overall body mechanics contribute to your pelvic health.

This comprehensive understanding helps us identify and address any underlying issues that might be affecting your pelvic floor.  Our goal is to support you in achieving optimal health and well-being by providing care that considers all aspects of your body and life. The benefits of this holistic approach include:

Thorough Assessments

We evaluate your entire body to identify contributing factors to your pelvic symptoms, ensuring no aspect of your health is overlooked.

Preventative Care

Understanding and addressing the root causes of your symptoms can help prevent future issues and maintain long-term pelvic health.

Personalised Treatment Plans

Tailored exercises and techniques address not only your pelvic floor but also other related areas, promoting overall well-being.

Enhanced Quality of Life

Comprehensive care can alleviate a wide range of symptoms, improving your confidence, comfort, and overall quality of life.

Improved Outcomes

By considering the whole body, we can enhance the effectiveness of treatments, leading to better results and quicker recovery.

What will happen at your Appointment?

Your Pelvic Health Assessment will take 60 minutes in our private and comfortable clinic. We'll start by discussing your symptoms and medical history, covering your bladder, bowel, and sexual health confidentially and sensitively. This helps us decide the best approach for assessment and treatment of your complaint.

During the consultation, we’ll examine your posture and how your pelvis moves. We will look at how your entire body functions together, rather than focusing on individual parts in isolation. Understanding this helps us identify any underlying issues that might be contributing to your pelvic problems. By looking at your posture and pelvis movement, we can see how different parts of your body interact and support each other. This holistic approach ensures we address the root cause of your symptoms and create a more effective treatment plan tailored to your needs.

If needed, we may do an external and/or internal vaginal exam. This helps us understand how your pelvic floor muscles are working and check for any signs of prolapse that might be causing your symptoms. Internal exams are optional and can be done in this session (if there's time) or in a later one. You can bring a chaperone if you like. We'll discuss everything with you and answer any questions beforehand and during the exam. We might also ask you to keep a bladder or bowel diary to help us better understand your bladder and/or bowel function.

We want you to feel fully involved, so please ask any questions or share any concerns you have—this is all about you and what works best for your recovery.

After your appointment, we'll email you a detailed plan with all the exercises and advice we discussed. You can always reach out to us via email or text to get the most out of your rehabilitation program.
