What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound Therapy is a therapeutic technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to stimulate tissues beneath the skin. These sound waves are inaudible to the human ear and offer a range of therapeutic benefits.

During application of Ultrasound Therapy, the physiotherapist will apply a gel to the area that will be treated. The time and power at which Ultrasound is applied is calculated by your physiotherapist based on several factors including the time since injury, the depth of the tissue being treated and the size of the area being treated.

The effectiveness of Ultrasound Therapy can vary, as each individual may respond differently to the treatment. While some patients experience significant benefits, others may find it less impactful. Since the effectiveness can differ, bespoke treatment plans from your professional LBPC physiotherapist are particularly important.

What are the benefits of Ultrasound?

The benefits of ultrasound therapy are due to both thermal and non-thermal effects.

Thermal effects refer to the heat generated by the ultrasound waves, which helps to increase blood flow, relax muscles, and enhance tissue healing.

Non-thermal effects involve the mechanical vibrations of the ultrasound waves, which promote cell repair, reduce inflammation, and improve tissue permeability.

Together, these effects contribute to the overall therapeutic benefits of ultrasound.

Will Therapeutic Ultrasound Hurt?

Therapeutic ultrasound is generally a painless procedure. Most patients experience a gentle warming sensation during the treatment, which can be quite soothing.

What Conditions can Ultrasound treat?

Ultrasound treatment can assist with various conditions and is effective for treating injured tissues. Often, ultrasound is used in combination with other physiotherapy methods, such as exercises, to enhance overall treatment outcomes.

Your LBPC physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the root cause of your symptoms and determine the most effective treatment approach. This personalised treatment programme may include the use of ultrasound.
